So you’re in the market for a new pet gate. There are so many choices for different applications to choose from. Pressure mounted pet gates make up a large portion of those gates. So what is it and is it the right gate for me?

Every gate except for a “free standing” pet gate has some method to keep it standing straight up while it’s being used. The free standing gate is a special gate that needs no brackets or mounting hardware. Once the gate is assembled it can stand on its own.

Pressure mounting refers to the method this gate uses to hold it in a location. These gates are very easy to use and install. There are no special tools, tricks or tips you need to successfully set them up. Once you begin they normally only take a few minutes of your time for installation.

The gate is designed to be held in place by using tension. They do not require any special mounting hardware, you won’t have to do any drilling and there are no screws to hold it in place. There are two common methods that pressure mounted gates use. Depending on your situation you may choose one or the other.

The first method for securing the gate is using an adjustable-width lever action system. Once the proper width for the opening is determined you set the gate, place it into position then press the lever down to lock it in. When you press the lever down it pulls outward pressure on the doorframe or wall to hold it in place,

The second, and nowadays, most common mounting system uses 4 hand adjustment knobs. There are two adjuster knobs located on each side of the gate with one at the top and the other at the bottom. This gate is placed into the location and you adjust the knobs outward. This puts pressure on the wall or door and holds it in place.

Unlike a hardware mounted gate, a pressure mounted pet gate will allow you to move it or relocate it quite easily without leaving damage on the wall or the doorway you had it in. They tend to be more versatile throughout the home giving you more options for using them.

This type of gate is also preferred even over the lever action pressure mounted gate. The unique u-shape design allows it to have a door that can accommodate using it in high traffic areas. Some even use a foot pedal operation that lets you move freely thru the gate especially when your hands are full. The door opens in either direction making it truly user friendly gate.

Some of the great additional features you can get when buying this type of gate are the multitude of widths it can accommodate, different heights, will fit uneven openings, taking it while you travel, mechanism to lock open when you need to and you can get it to match just about any décor in your home.

There is one major safety concern for this gate. DO NOT USE IT TO BLOCK A STAIRCASE! Stairways use specially designed gates, so unless the gate you buy is specifically made for this purpose don’t install it there. It will cause a major safety obstruction.

Remember if you still aren’t sure you can always call the manufacturer. They’re more than willing to answer all your questions.

How times have changed. The idea of sending the kids off to play with their friends down at the park is simply no longer feasible unless you are heading down there with them. There are just to many risks in our modern society. That being said, keeping track of kids can be tough. That is where child locator devices come in.

Imagine you are at the mall. There is a big sale going on and the store you are in is packed. You are looking at some clothes. You look around and your son or daughter is gone. Panic time! The adrenaline starts pumping as you frantically look around for them. This doesn’t have to be the case. We live in a modern society that has produced a lot of truly useless gadgets. Child locator devices are not one of these. They are incredibly useful and a great way to minimize the stress in your life.

So, just what are these handy, dandy gadgets? They are security systems you can use to keep an eye on the location of your kid at all times. There are a variety of models, but most work in the same way. You have a small clip that is placed on the clothes of the child in some area that isn’t obvious. The clip is automatically synced to a locator that you carry with you. It is the size of a phone.

The locators are pretty amazing. Depending on the style and brand, they do a number of different things. All of them will obviously point you in the direction of your child. They do this by either vibrating in the direction, making a noise or showing the direction on a screen. The better models actually go beyond this. You can set a wander alert that goes off whenever your child gets more than a certain number of feet from you. This is a tremendous option when you are in a big crowd.

Child locator devices are something you should seriously consider if you take your kids into areas where you can lose them. Being able to find your son or daughter quickly will take a load of stress out of your life.

Adopting a senior pet can be just as rewarding, if not more, as bringing a puppy or kitten home from your local shelter. There are some great benefits to adopting an aging dog or cat and most health issues surrounding senior pets can be easily overcome.

Mike Fry, Executive Director at Animal Ark Shelter in Minneapolis, MN shares his thoughts about adopting senior pets. His shelter has several successful programs to encourage people to take home an older pet.

Q: What are the reasons that older pets do not get adopted as easily as puppies and kittens?

A: I think, primarily, it is due to misconceptions about older animals. That old myth “you can’t teach an old dog new tricks” is part of a greater notion on the part of many people that adult or older animals are set in their ways. Plus, puppies are just so darn cute that they pull at people’s heart strings very easily. People can fall in love with a puppy simply by seeing its picture. An older animal may take some time to meet and connect with. They are, however, well worth the time spent!

Q: What are the benefits to adopting senior pets?

A: Very often these dogs and cats come well trained! That whole phase of chewing, potty training and terrorizing can be bypassed by adopting older animals. The older animals require less exercise, less energy, less food, and are generally a LOT easier to ease into a home. Plus, because an animal’s personality is somewhat determined genetically, and is not fully expressed until adulthood, it is often easier to know what personality a dog will have if an adult dog is adopted. Additionally, senior citizens who adopt senior dogs find they have lifestyles that are more consistent with the needs of senior pets. Adopting a very senior pet does not involve making a 20-year commitment, something some seniors are not prepared to do. However, they may be able to make a 3 – 6 year commitment. And a senior pet is perfect in that case.

Q: Why do senior dogs and cats make good companions for senior citizens?

A: Research has proven that people with pets live longer, happier lives. The health benefits of owning pets can extend a person’s life and dramatically increase the quality of life. I have heard many seniors say that a pet gives them something to do each day, which is important if you are retired, have no kids at home, etc. They provide love, activity and stimulation.

Q: How does a senior dog’s health play into the situation?

A: As a general rule, I don’t think health is a big problem. The general ailments of older animals are fairly easy to overcome. The key is to get people to connect with an older pet. When they do, the minor ailments of age usually mean little. An animal in pain can, understandably, be more aloof, or downright cranky. We have observed, therefore, some general personality changes in dogs when we put them on FlexPet with CM8. This helps them to present their “best side” when meeting perspective new families.

There are lots of misconceptions about adopting older animals and since puppies and kittens are so precious, it’s easy to see why people migrate to them. But Mike suggests taking the time to meet older animals and connect with them. They are well worth the time spent!

Our home is our sanctuary. It is our Shangri-la, our place of rest and of comfort. Our home is something we take pride in, and take great pain and effort to keep it unique and safe from intruders, all kinds of intruders. While there are many companies that offer sophisticated products for home security such as companies that offer biometric door locks, online webcam surveillance software, and even the construction of fortified panic rooms, we often forget about those intruders that if given a chance could fatally poison us: mice and rats.

Mice and rats are a menace to our homes. They are scavengers and as such, they linger in the darkest and dampest of places, feeding on things they can gnaw on. Their bodies are nimble and flexible enough to crawl in between walls, into holes and up to the ceilings. They have the potential to eat through electric wires causing short circuits, if not electrical fires. And if given a chance, they can invade our kitchen and our pantry, feasting on our food stock, perhaps even defecating on them. Such actions may lead us and our family into food poisoning or even worse. The black plague or the bubonic plague in the middle centuries were caused by an infestation of rats and mice and this lead to the deaths of thousands, decimations of neighborhoods and villages, and almost the eradication of cities. If we have learned about this dark past of our history, it is to protect our homes, dwellings and surroundings against this vermin.

The first line of defense is organizing our homes to be free from clutter and to be orderly. Most especially areas like the garage where there is a tendency to store things and keep it untidy. Boxes and boxes of our stored material is a good place for mice and rats to reside. They like to be hidden and love such places that are set up like that. Keeping the garage clean in as much as you can is one way of deterring them from entering your house.

If they are already present, then choose effective mice repellents to entrap or lure them away. In your pantry and cupboards, make sure that you have eucalyptus inside of them. There is a natural aversion of mice and rats to eucalyptus, which gives off this citric smell and is pleasant to humans. This easy form of mice repellent is also natural. There are other ways like non lethal mice traps that do capture mice live and lethal versions as well. But in a worse case scenario when there is the presence of infestation, call your exterminator and have him rid the place of the rodents. It may be costly but it cost more for hospitalization cost for food poisoning.

Why would soil need air? Isn’t it made up of dirt, leaves, and worms? Yes, but soil is a lot more than that. It’s made up of microorganisms that love oxygen and use that oxygen to decompose rotting plants and turn them into soil.

Soil also contains the roots of plants, and these roots need somewhere to go. Soil that doesn’t contain a lot of air holes is a difficult place for plants to live, since there are fewer places for roots to make their way through and less water for those roots to access. Air is an important part of a garden, and it’s a particularly important part of a compost bin.

Why Aerate The Compost Pile?

When you’re creating new soil, or compost, it’s especially critical that air be involved in the process. Compost is made out of fruit and vegetables, leaves, paper, and anything else that you throw into the bin.

All of this matter would simply sit in the compost bin without rotting if it were not for the help of organisms that help break down organic materials. These organisms include bacteria, fungi, protozoa and actinomycetes. Fungi are very good at digesting lignin, the stuff that holds wood together. Bacteria are very good at making the compost pile heat up and move more quickly into soil.

One of the reasons you need to aerate your compost is because of the bacteria. Your goal is to encourage fast and effective decomposition. Most of the microorganisms in the soil are bacteria. Some bacteria like oxygen, while others can work without it. The one who work without it are called anaerobic bacteria.

While composting can still occur with these bacteria, they are very slow. They also produce stinky byproducts like methane, nothing that you want to have dominating your compost. Your goal is to move the compost pile into an environment that aerobic bacteria will love, so that the compost becomes finished more quickly and smells good while it’s composting.

Ways to Aerate The Compost Bin

How can you add air to the compost bin? Some homemade bins actually have an air pipe down the middle. However if your compost is smelly and slow and you’re using a commercial bin, what is a compost-owner to do?

The simplest way to aerate a compost bin is to get an aeration tool. This is a stick with wings on the end. You plunge the stick into the compost, open the wings, and move the stick around, moving air into the pile as you do so.

Tumbler composting bins can be expensive, but they are also excellent at adding air to the compost. They produce finished compost very quickly because of the amount of aeration the compost receives. Some tumbling compost bins rotate on a central pole that goes through the bin like a cement mixer, while others tumble top over bottom.

Those who are looking for a low-tech, low-expense option may choose to go for a wire-covered bin. These homemade bins are good for larger properties or places without a large concern about rodents, since the wire mesh on the sides means that animals may enter the bin. However, they automatically provide air to the outside of the compost.

Whether it’s with a simple compost tool or with a bin specifically designed for the purpose, adding air to your compost bin is a must. If you want compost that smells good and produces a fabulous soil amendment in a hurry, then aeration is the way to go.
Celebrate. This party is for you. Oh, I know your little one is the star. But you’re the one who has made it through the most exhausting, exhilarating, scary, crazy, wonderful first year of your baby’s life. You deserve a party! Choose a theme, food, guests and everything else that makes you happy and your child will be happy, too.

2. Keep it simple. Yes, you and your child should celebrate this milestone, but don’t lose sleep over it. Choose foods that are easy to prepare, or better yet, get take-out. There’s also nothing wrong with asking guests to each bring a dish. You don’t have to run around to every party store, trying to track down the perfect decorations, invitations or favors. Pick a theme that is easy to find. Order your supplies online to save time.

3. Let your baby help you plan. You know your child’s temperament. If he or she loves to be around people, then invite the whole gang. But if your little one is shy, then keep the party on the small side. What time of day is he or she most active and alert? Make that the time for the celebration, so that your baby will be awake for the festivities.

4. Go picture crazy. Take a million snapshots of the big event. Fill an entire album or scrapbook with the results. Order first birthday photo invitations (or thank you cards) that feature your baby. Consider giving your guests photo favors as a keepsake. Document the wonderful day with photographs, so that your precious little one will be able to visualize the celebration when he or she is older.

5. Select a co-host. Ask a friend, relative or spouse to be a very present partner during the party. They can keep the celebration going if you have to stop and change a diaper. He or she can also watch the baby, if you have to take something out of the oven or attend to another guest. Plus, it’s always good to have another pair of attentive eyes making sure that the little ones are safe. Finally, it helps to have a dedicated volunteer who will participate in taking photos and video, when you’re busy.

6. Games are not necessary. Yes, you can include them if you want, but you don’t need to go out of your way to entertain your guests. Your baby will be the center of attention and the entertainment at his or her first birthday party. Plus, these celebrations are usually on the short side, around two hours or so. That’s because your child will get quickly worn out by all the festivities, if they continue much longer than that. So, it may be hard to even find time for games during the event.

7. Don’t forget the cake. Not only is this your baby’s first birthday cake, but it is a great photo opportunity. Just about every little angel enjoys it and making a mess of it is an added bonus for them. Arm yourself with baby wipes, get out the camcorder and enjoy watching your child dive into this special treat.

8. Create a time capsule. Pass out slips of paper and ask each of your guests to write a message to your child. It can be anything from a loving sentiment to words of wisdom and advice for living. Or you could ask everyone to stick to a topic, such as hopes and dreams for your baby or guesses for their future. Add all the contributions to a clean popcorn tin or other large air tight container. You might want to also include a news and entertainment magazine from that week, photos from the party, the invitation, favors, and any other memento that represents either the party, your child or the world at that time. Seal it up and place in the back of a closet until your child opens it when he or she is eighteen or twenty-one.

You don’t have to go crazy and plan an elaborate event for this to be a wonderful occasion. Make it a simple celebration. Ask for help. Take tons of photos. Put together a time capsule. Enjoy the cake. With just a little effort and a lot of love, you are sure to create a wonderful first birthday party for your child.

By using native plants in their landscaping plan, homeowners can be assured that their plants will thrive in the dry, sunny Texas climate. Native plants make good environmental sense as well, as they generally require less water and can survive for extended periods with little or no watering. Many also serve to attract butterflies and other wildlife, providing an additional level of beauty to these practical and attractive plantings. Here are five of the best native plants for Texas landscape design.

For a burst of color throughout the spring, the huisache daisy’s bright yellow blooms will brighten any yard. Also known as the butterfly daisy or honey daisy, this charming flower of the aster family has attractive foliage and a sweet scent that attracts butterflies; the flower grows up to one foot in height. Huisache daisies can be found growing in large quantities along Texas roads and highways, providing a solid blanket of golden color from March to June; they require partial shade in order to thrive. Because the huisache daisy flourishes in the dry conditions of Texas, it is an outstanding choice for environmentally conscious homeowners who want to conserve water.

The anacacho orchid tree, also known simply as the orchid tree, is so named for its springtime display of orchid-like flowers ranging in hue from soft white to pale pink. Standing six to twelve feet high, it is tolerant to Texas heat and does well on very little water, but requires a certain amount of shielding from harsh winter wind. After the flowers are gone, silver bark and dense green foliage make this a lovely ornamental tree all year round.

Also known as the hummingbird bush, flame acanthus is a native Texas honeysuckle shrub with reddish-orange flowers and light green leaves. Blooms appear in early June and persist throughout the fall, attracting butterflies and hummingbirds with their sweet-smelling fragrance. Drought tolerant, this hardy plant prefers fairly moist soil for best results. It likes full sun and can survive extremes of hot and cold better than average. Pruning in winter produces a denser and more attractive plant for ornamental purposes.

With large, dramatic flowers ranging in hue from golden yellow to red and magenta, Indian blanket is a showy addition to any landscaping project. Also known as firewheel due to the firework-like appearance of its blooms, Indian blanket grows to one or two feet tall and spreads like a shrub. It does well in dry conditions and prefers full sun or partial shade; the sandier the soil, the more flowers it produces. Indian blanket is an excellent choice for first-time native plant gardening since it requires little care and is exceptionally hardy, even reseeding itself naturally at the end of its growing season. It attracts butterflies and stands up reasonably well to incursions by deer.

Because buffalograss is a native prairie grass endemic to Texas, it is an environmentally responsible and hardy alternative to other types of lawn grass. It requires little water to survive, and is tolerant of both sun and heat. Soft to the touch and varying in color between grayish green and blue-green, its flowers attract butterflies and, if left unmowed, it can provide homes for a variety of native wildlife. Buffalograss can grow to a height of one foot, but generally ranges between three and ten inches tall. It does best in clay loam, and goes dormant during extended droughts and in the winter.

Keeping your home safe does not just mean being secured from burglars and thieves. There is another intruder that often goes undetected. What this trespasser takes may be morsels of items but if found out and detected the shriek and horrors of those living in your home will be definitely heard. House mice are a problem, and potentially, it is a major one. However cute house mice may be, and if you are thinking like those lab mice we see that are sacrificed for the greater good of humanity, they are a danger because they grow up to be rats. These pests can contaminate the food you have in your household, and in doing so, they can give you disease, sometimes fatal ones. Aside from that, the excrement of these rodents is also dangerous if ingested, and it does happen. How bad can they be?

The source of the black plague or the bubonic plague was deemed to be due to rats and their excrement. This was discovered centuries after the disease had ravaged most of Europe, killing thousands of people and making countries paranoid of immigrants coming from countries that had been hit by this contagious disease. These days there are several things that one can do to minimize this invasion to your home. Here are some tips that may be useful to you:

- Keep your homes clean. Try not leaving too much clutter in the household. Having such matter in your homes make it easy for household mice to set camp in such places. There are so many places these rats can hide and having your homes messy only makes it more convenient and easier for them to start a home.

- Cover up any unnecessary holes. Place screens in your holes especially rain pipes and gutter holes. By having that type of screen, it lessens the chances of mice using that aperture to enter your harm. Mice and Rats have very flexible vertebrae and they can bend and squeeze through holes that are as big as their heads. Be aware when purchasing screens

- When using poisonous items to kill mice, make sure that they can’t be found by children. Some rat poisons are laced with sugar and it may be possible that a child accidentally finds this and ingests it, which is equally as dangerous to them. For older children, teaching them what the poison is and reminding them to stay away from it is one good measure.

There are no guarantees that your home will never be invaded by house mice, but with good maintenance practices, you minimize the chances for this burglary to happen.

Finally, the real truth about getting rid of mice! Find out what really works and what’s a waste of money! You can move those pesky house mice right on out the door!

One of the most frustrating things that can happen to any keen gardener is finding holes and other ailments in your plants as you wonder through your garden. What should have been an enjoyment of your gardening efforts soon turns into a nightmare as you find more and more evidence of pests in your garden. These pests come in many different shapes and sizes, with some of the most common being worms, slugs, caterpillars, snails and birds. Since they are a natural part of the environment, it is impossible to totally eradicate these pests, but you can still do a lot to protect your garden and your efforts.

While garden pests do come in many different varieties, those belonging to the insect family can wreak the most havoc on any garden. Insects have been known to destroy entire gardens in a matter of hours. The first step to dealing with insects, is prevention. Reduce the areas that insects and other diseases thrive. Decaying matter, weeds, and old leaves provide ample breeding grounds for these pests. Clear them as soon and as often as possible. Regularly turning the soil in uncultivated parts of the garden can also help you eliminate any insects that might have taken up shelter underground. Where possible, do create your compost heap in a part of the garden as far away from your most vulnerable plants as possible.

Another popular pest and plant disease control method is the use of dormant sprays. These sprays are most effective if used when your garden’s plants are dormant too, which in the northern hemisphere, is around February. Because these sprays can be quite potent, it is very important to follow the usage directions carefully. Just spraying indiscriminately, will be both ineffective, and result in you killing off huge tracts of your garden in the process. While you do want to kill off pests, you do not want to kill every living creature in your garden. A lot of insects and bugs are beneficial for the healthy growth of some plants, so you do need to do your research, and use such sprays carefully.

Another oft ignored pest that wreaks havoc in many gardens is the common bird. Many gardeners try and keep these at bay by chasing them away on sight. It can get tiresome just keeping an eye on your garden, hence the popularity of scarecrows. These can be less effective in places with little wind, as the birds soon get used to them. A better approach could be the installation of a bird feeder in the garden. As well as keeping the birds from the more vulnerable plants in the guardian, a bird feeder can add to the overall character of your garden. Lastly, domestic pets like dogs and cats can help eliminate the problem of birds in the garden, although such pets can themselves damage your garden.

Some gardeners are unfortunate enough to suffer gopher infestations. The first sign of this is seeing dirt mounds around the garden, and the inexplicable death of otherwise healthy plants. These rodents can be anything between 5 and 14 inches long, and are often black or a light brown in color. Their preferred diet of plant roots is what kills off most plants where gophers are found. An effective way of dealing with them is using specialized gopher traps. Once you have located their tunnels, you can use the traps, or in more extreme cases, use smoke bombs thrown into these tunnels to eliminate them.

The main trick to dealing with garden pest though, is swift action. Once you spot signs of pests, eliminate them as soon as possible, before they become established. Once done, follow the guidance above, and eliminate their breeding grounds, and by extension any chance of the pest problem recurring. If your garden is close to your neighbors, it can be beneficial to coordinate pest elimination efforts, to ensure that all the areas near your vulnerable plants are pest free.
