If you are allergic to dust mites then you suffer from Allergies Type 1, also called Contact Allergies. Proteins found in the waste dropping cause allergic reactions. Each dust mite can create up to 20 dropping each day. Dust mites are not parasites they are microscope bugs that live of dead skin cells shed from humans and pets.

Dust mites prefer warm, moist areas such as a mattress, pillow, and chairs to live in. In other words just about anyplace you like to spend time. Do you spend up to one third of your life in a bed? That is called New York City to a dust mite. Do you sit in a favorite chair when you watch T.V? That is Las Vegas. Do you use the same pillow night after night? Welcome to Miami.

The typical human body will shed about 1/5 of an ounce of dead skin each week. Have you ever looked at a beam of light coming into the room and saw dust flakes floating in the light? About 80 percent of the material you see is actually dead skin fakes. That is manta from heaven for dust mites.

Depending on the environment nearly 100,000 dust mites can live in one square yard of carpet. Up to 500,000 can live in your pillow and up to 10 million can live in mattress. The life cycle of the dust mite is from one to four months. The adult females can lay up to 80 eggs in this time period and it takes about one month from the egg hatching for the dust mite to reach adulthood.

For most people dust mites are not harmful but if you are allergic to dust mites then symptoms like itchy watery eyes, hive, shortness of breath, bronchial spasms and other symptoms. There is no cure for dust mite allergy, only prevention.

There are several ways to control the dust mite population. Using chemicals to control the dust mite population is not recommended. The humidity of the environment plays a major role in keeping the dust mite population under control. The higher the humidity the higher the population, the lower the humidity, less than 50 percent, the lower the population. In vesting in a good quality dehumidifier will be your first line of defense.

Air cleaners can make a really big difference in the severity and frequency of allergy attacks. The central heating system should have an electrostatic air filter to distribute clean air through out the house. These electrostatic air filters trap microscopic allergens. Consider investing in a HEPA room air cleaner for all bedrooms and in the family room.

After you have vacuumed your carpets get down on your hands and knees, in a well-lit room and slap the carpet with your hand. If you see dust rising into the air then you need a better vacuum cleaner. Most vacuums will blow the smaller particles of dust back into the air through the exhaust. You will need to get a vacuum that has some type of HEPA filter that traps microscopic particles of dust from being blown back into the air.

Cover the mattress and pillows with a plastic or other dust mite impervious cover. Many synthetic products are available to help control dust mite are available on the internet.

Wash the sheets and blankets every two week in very hot water, at least 130 degrees F. If the fabrics cannot be washed in how water then put them into the freezer for one to two days to kill the dust mites.

Common Vitamins and over the counter products can help with Allergies such as Vitamin A, Vitamin B, Vitamin C, Vitamin E, Pantothenic Acid, Glucosamine, Antioxidants, Allergy Aid, and Quercitin.

Vitamin A is a known antioxidant and can assist the human body in the healing process. Vitamin A is stored in the liver and fat cells of the human body and can reach toxic levels. DO NOT take more than the recommended dosage of Vitamin A.

Up to one-third of older people can no longer absorb Vitamin B from their food. Vitamin B is needed to form red blood cells and keep nerves healthy.

Vitamin C is nature’s protective nutrient, essential for defending the body against pollution and infection and enhances the bodies immune system.

Beta Carotene protects the mucus membranes of the mouth, nose, throat and lungs. It also helps protect Vitamin C from oxidation, which enables it to perform at optimum efficiency.

Vitamin E protects the lung tissue from inhaled pollutants and aids in the functioning of the immune system.

Many find Pantothenic Acid to be very helpful against allergy symptoms. It is another form of nontoxic B vitamins. Pantothenic Acid is critical in the metabolism and synthesis of carbohydrates, proteins and fats.

Glucosamine is an anti-inflammatory and may give some relief from allergy symptoms.

Substances called antioxidants can neutralize free radical by pairing up or binding with the free radical elections thus inhibiting them from damaging cells in the human body.

Allergy Aid supplies 9 beneficial Herb’s to help provide temporary relief of respiratory allergies. The natural action of these specific Herb’s help to open bronchial tubes and ease breathing.

Quercitin is a well known flavonoid. Flavonoids are powerful antioxidants and can reduce inflammation boost the immune system and strengthen blood vessels and improve circulation. Quercitin is also known for its ability to block the release of histamines, thus reducing or preventing allergy symptoms.

If you have indoor allergies, your allergy symptoms are likely caused by dust mite allergens, mold allergens and pet dander. While it may be easy to understand how molds and pets contribute to allergy symptoms, dust and dust mite allergens may be more difficult. Although there are many components in house dust to which people may be allergic, the biggest culprit is the dust mite. Dust mites are microscopic and because they cannot be seen, you may not know how to combat this virtually ‘invisible’ allergen source. Many allergic people have dust mite allergies, and to find allergy relief, it is important to learn how dust mites cause allergy symptoms. With this edition of the Allergy Control Products series on “The Secret to Living with Allergies”, you’ll find basic facts about dust mites in order to understand how they are affecting your health.

What are Dust Mites?

Dust mites are eight-legged arachnids and are relatives of spiders and ticks. The dust mite is microscopic and, unlike bed bugs, cannot be seen by the human eye. S `ince dust mites cannot be seen, it may be startling to learn that over one million dust mites can live in a single bed. Adult dust mites live for two to three months, during which time the female can lay 25 to 50 eggs every three weeks. Each dust mite produces approximately 20 waste particles a day, and more than 100,000 of these waste particles can be present in only a gram of dust.

To see a video of dust mites under microscope, visit the Allergy Learning Center at www.allergycontrol.com. Here, you have a rare opportunity to see these tiny allergy-causing mites up close.

What is Dust Mite Allergen?

Allergies are not caused by the dust mite being inhaled, but instead, allergy symptoms stem from a combination of waste particles from dust mites as well as their dead body fragments. These particles are called dust mite allergens, as they are the parts of the dust mite that actually cause allergy symptoms. To compound the allergy-causing ability of the dust mite, waste particles and dead body fragments remain allergenic even after the mite that produced them has died.

Where do Dust Mites Live in the Home?

Dust mites can live in even the cleanest homes and are present in nearly all homes in areas where the relative humidity is greater than 50% for some portion of the year. Dust mites are photophobic, which means that they thrive in dark, warm and humid environments. The largest source of dust mite allergen exposure comes from the bed, as it provides the perfect conditions for dust mite growth as well as their greatest food source, the shed scales of human skin. Large numbers of dust mites can live in your pillow, mattress, box spring, comforter and blanket. The second largest source of dust mites and dust mite allergens comes from the carpet, as the carpet provides another good living environment and dust mite allergens can build up over time. Other areas of the home that are prone to dust mite allergens are upholstered furniture, drapes, throw pillows and other areas with soft materials.

What is the First Area to Address for Dust Mite Allergy Relief?

While it is impossible to eliminate dust mites altogether, you can minimize your exposure to dust mite allergens and find allergy relief. Your allergy relief steps should be focused on the bedroom, as it is the room where you spend the most time in the day and have the highest exposure to dust mite allergens. Dust mite allergens are dispersed as we sleep in bed at night, fluff pillows or make the bed, walk or sit on the carpet, sit on stuffed furniture and come in contact with any soft, stuffed materials.

What Allergy Relief Steps Should Be Taken?

Don’t despair over not being able to completely eliminate dust mites, as scientific studies have shown that taking allergen avoidance steps to minimize dust mite allergen exposure in the bedroom leads to a decrease in allergic symptoms and a decrease in medication requirements for people with dust mite allergies.

Important dust mite allergy relief steps include:

Use allergy encasings to create a barrier between you and the allergens in the bed.

Wash linens, blankets and any un-encased bedding every week in hot water.

Remove or treat the carpet to eliminate a large allergen source.

If carpets cannot be removed, vacuum thoroughly with a HEPA vacuum cleaner or apply a carpet treatment to denature allergens.

Keep humidity levels below 50% and ideally between 35-40%, as dust mites thrive in high humidity.

Use HEPA filtration to capture allergens. HEPA filtration vacuum cleaners and air cleaners capture 99.97% of allergens down to 0.3 microns that pass through the filter.

Use central furnace filters to capture allergens in your vent system.

Allergy Control Products has been recommended by thousands of physicians as the most trusted allergy company for revolutionary products. Whether you’re looking for the highest quality air purifier, air cleaner, hypoallergenic bedding or more, you can rely on the over 500 allergy products that have helped hundreds of thousands of allergy sufferers combat allergies and allergy relief.
Article Source

Dust mites, as previously explained, are irritating microscopic creatures that cause many people to feel miserable in their own homes. While they’re alive, their waste product resides in our mattresses and when they die, their dead bodies remain. Both of these things create the protein that sets our eyes itching and watering. So what are we to do?

Statistics show that dust mites live in our bedrooms more than any other room. Therefore, that should be our first step in the war against them. Let’s look at some popular myths about controlling dust mites in your mattress (all of which are floating around on Yahoo Answers offering BAD advice):

1) Raid/Febreeze/Windex Your Bed: Spraying cleaning products and fragrances on your mattress will NOT do anything to get rid of the dust mites. Instead, you’ll just be sticking your face into chemicals every night and probably harming yourself further. You will also be creating a fire hazard by covering your mattress with flammable substances. Very few chemicals have been proven to effectively KILL and DENATURE dust mites at the same time.

2) Sweeping the Mattress: Don’t. Dust mites do not live on the surface of your mattress or pillow. Instead, they burrow down and take up all 9-16 inches and cannot be reached by a broom. If you do this, you will just be stirring up dust and irritating your allergies even more. You will also not be solving the problem.

3) Airing out your Mattress: Some people believe that if you haul your mattress outside once a month and beat it than the dust mite proteins will disappear. While dust mites prefer the cooler temperatures of an air-conditioned home, they will not die because of some sunshine. Beating them will only leave a headache and not cause them to abandon to the grass below.

4) Saran Wrapping Mattress: Yes, there are people doing this. They are literally buying rolls of saran wrap and going to town on their mattress and pillows. Uncomfortable and highly ineffective solution. Since the saran wrap is not only large piece, you will continue to have areas where they can slip through and from where the proteins can become airborne. Not only that, most plastic wraps are treated with chemicals and you’d be further exposing yourself to possible allergens.

So we know what NOT to do but what is the easiest, most effective solution? Doctors recommend that you enclose your mattress in zippered encasings that are proven to trap 99.95% of all allergens – dust mites included. This method of containment is non-toxic and practical for anyone’s budget and bedding desires. These covers come in a variety of fabrics and usually have one of two methods for protecting you. In my opinion, the most comfortable method is the encasings that are tightly woven so that their mean pore sizes (the spaces between fibers) is less than 5.0 microns. This method allows for 100% cotton options and opens the door to organic bedding choices.

The second method is to buy encasings with urethane membranes fused to the inside. These are perfect if you’re protecting your children because they are waterproof and guard against “accidents” hurting the mattress. Generally these are made of polyester fabrics and are cheaper than the non-membrane ones.

In either option, it is important to get a ZIPPERED encasing for your mattress, box spring, and pillow cases! The zipper and specialty fabrics will ensure that you are protected against dust must protein. After you take this important step, you will just have to worry about minimum up-keep!

Remember: you will never be 100% rid of dust mites but you can control your environment and minimize them. Ideally, you want to cut the problem down to 1/10th to 1/100th of what it was before.

And finally, the answer to one important question I know I had when I started researching dust mites: won’t dust mites just live on top of mattress encasings?

After calling up AllergyStore.com and asking them, I found that technically, yes. However, they will exist in a significantly less population. More importantly, if you wash your sheets and pillow covers each week in hot water, you will remove their food source and kill/wash away the dead bodies and potential protein.

A little investment in protecting your bedding and you will be feeling better in no time.

Dust mites are not creatures that appear only in youth hostiles and boarding houses. They are at this very moment living and dining comfortably IN YOUR BEDROOM AND IN YOUR CHILD’S BEDROOM. You can SEE a mosquito, a cockroach or a bedbug so that’s a reasonably fair fight. Since dust mites can’t be seen by the naked eye, they are definite favorites in this battle. You are losing!

Your bedroom is swarming with hundreds of thousands of them! Microscopic, eight-legged, spiderlike, sightless dust mites, so ugly that you would jump back if you saw them under the microscope. These microscopic critters feast and grow fat by munching on your cast-off dead skin cells.

But there is no true symbiosis here because while these little buggers survive on your yummy cells, they, in return, irritate and damage your respiratory system! Humans are super sensitive to proteins left behind in the mites’ feces. Are you disgusted yet?

You spend about one third of your time sleeping. Your breathing is less guarded while you sleep. You shed most of your skin cells in the bedroom. The resulting damage is not “if.” It is “when.” Watch a child having a severe asthma attack and you know that none of us can afford to play “out of sight, out of mind.”

In ancient times when the life expectancy of a human being was less than half a century, cumulative damage wasn’t that threatening. Your ancestors were more likely to be felled by severe diarrhea, typhoid, amebic dysentery, a flu epidemic or tuberculosis. Several of my ancestors unfortunately died by falling off their horses. There is no written record as to a possible quantity of whiskey involved. But I digress. These days you will live enough blessed decades for the mite-poop to have a very long time to mess with your quality of life.

Your mattress, box springs, and pillows are prized territory for mites since they thrive in dusty, dark, humid, warm places. The jury is still out about the value of special mite-proof bedding to protect you from exposure but there is much you can do before making that relatively expensive purchase.

A perfect bedroom is bright, cool, and dry. A perfect bedroom is free of upholstered furniture and ALL clutter. A perfect bedroom has a floor that can be wet-mopped. Perfect bedroom drapes should be of washable material or they should be replaced with blinds or shutters.

Dust at least once a week using cloths that actually collect the dust rather than wafting it from place to place.

Vacuum once or twice a week using a sweeper with a HEPA filter. These machines are a bit more expensive but remember that while you can empty your sweeper bag, some of what you inhale stays forever in your lungs, If you cannot replace your carpet with something you can wet-mop, then steam clean it as often as you can afford.

Wash all bedding (including pillows) in very hot water often. WARM WATER DOES NOT KILL DUST MITES.

Unfortunately your pets shed more skin cells than you do so if adorable Fido or Fifi shares your bed, you have created a five-star hotel for your dust-mite guests. Bathe your pet more often than you would like or let him/her sleep in the family room.

Sweet dreams!

The term house dust mite (HDM) is generalized to all species of mites which have a worldwide distribution (1). Like Spiders, HDMs belong to the class Arachnida. Of the at least 50 species of HDMs that have been found in domestic house dust, two of the family pyroglyphidae, namely D. pteronyssinus and D. farinae, are the most important in temperate climates, both in terms of numbers and of clinical relevance. Clinically, these HDMs are of relevance because most asthma symptoms in children and young adults are associated with both an immediate hypersensitivity to their inhaled allergens, and a familial tendency towards atopy (2). D. pteronyssinus predominates over most HDM species worldwide and is the most frequent species in tropical and subtropical areas. D. farinae is the most common species in dry, continental climates and is rare in costal climates (3). The tropical rat mite, Ornithonyssus bacoti, is one of the most common houses invading species; it is an obligate, blood feeding ecto-parasite with worldwide distribution (4). Natural host of Ornithonyssus bacoti include several species of rat and mice, hamsters, gerbils, voles, and other wild rodents (5). Although none of these species of mite are truly parasitic on human or pets, they bite people readily, often producing dermatitis and itching. Rat mite infestations occur in structures where rat nests are located, infestation are sometimes first noticed following examination or after the natural host have died or left the structure and may also occur where heavy mite infestations have developed around a rodent nest. If a rat has a nest in an attic or other site inside the home and it dies or vacates the nest these mites will leaves the nest and body in search of a host and can attack humans. The bite of these ecto-parasite cause irritation and sometimes a painful dermatitis leaving red spots on the infested skin (6).

Although dust mites were observed in dust by a scientist in 1694, it was not until the 1960’s that they were associated with allergies and have become recognized in the past 30 years as the most important sources of allergens in human habitation (7). Over the years dust mites have become a target of extensive research for their relation to allergies and development of asthma (8). Free- living mites have long been recognised as one of the most important sources of allergen of house dust responsible for the origin of atopic and bronchial asthma, rhinitis and dermatitis , eczema, hay fever, sinusitis, and middle ear infection (9). As a very ancient organism, the mites is enormous diversified and adapted to a wide variety of environments including plants, animals, human, soil, fresh and salty water, organic rabbles, houses, mattresses and old books. They thrive in their thousands in warm, moist places feeding on dead skin scales; they live in soft furnishing such as beds, bedding, carpets, and soft toys. A great number of factors play a role in exposure to mites, the prevalence of different categories of mites vary considerably among geographical locations. Different socioeconomic conditions influence the prevalence of domestic mites. Environmental factors are likely to play an important role in the control of house dust mites (HDM). Thus, understanding environmental factors influencing mite population can be expelled in mite control. Sinai is the veritable gateway to Egypt from the east. It is triangular in shape, and stretches for 400 Km from north to south and 200 Km from east to west. It is generally hot during the summer, stormy and exposed to cold air currents during the winter. Average daily maximum temperature, range from 29oC to 17oC, and minimum, from 21oC to 9oC in the summer and winter respectively. Also daily relative humidity fluctuates between 65% in daytime and 85% at night in the summer and between 60% and 80% respectively in winter.

El Arish is the capital and largest city, with 114,900 inhabitants (2002), of the North Sinai governorate. It lies on the Mediterranean coast of the Sinai Peninsula, 214 miles northeast of Cairo. El Arish is by a big Wadi called the Wadi El -Arish which receives flash flood water from much of north and central Sinai.

Study design

A descriptive, cross- sectional study was designed to investigate the mite fauna in homes of El Arish, north of Sinai. In this study El Arish city was divided into 10 areas in each area 5 homes were selected randomly. The occupants agreed to participate in the study.

1. Criteria of house selection

A short characteristic of each house and of one of the examined places is presented:

b. An apartment on the end of the block house, the room is cold and damp in winter and sunny and warm in summer. Abed 12 years old is used every night.

c. A stone house heated with gas and stove, rather damp room on the first floor. A 5 years old bed is sometimes used for sleeping

d. A warm apartment on the first floor of the block has average air temperature about 20oC, RH 60% in summer time, and 68%. An old cotton mattress is used every night for about 20 years.

- A new stone with hermetic windows. An old (about 40 years) coach is used in living room.

- A low income homes included single family detached houses.

- An apartments in a free standing building with three or fewer units, and apartments in complexes with three or more units.

2. Criteria of patients and control

Patients with history suggestive of asthma together with healthy individuals as control were lived in the houses studied. All patient and control completed a questionnaire to take a psychosocial history including question about age, gender, educational level, employment, family history of asthma, information relevant to asthma risk factors, including: socioeconomic status, home life, school, the age of the mattress, signs of humidity in the bedroom, number of occupants, symptoms, severity of symptoms, asthma treatment and understanding of treatment.

Everyone has dust mites in their beds, which can trigger allergic reactions because of the droppings these tiny insects leave behind. These insects are so tiny that you cannot see them with the naked eye. They do not bite and do not cause any diseases on their own. They thrive in the warm humid environment that a bed mattress provides as well as in carpeting, stuffed toys and in the cushions of the sofa. You can control the dust mite population in your home with regular cleaning and by using dust mite spray.

This product contains boron, which has proven effective in the control of insects in the home. It is a powder that you mix with water in a spray bottle. You spray your home and then repeat the task every four months. It will not harm fabrics and is clear and odourless so it won’t cause any allergic reactions to the residents of the home. You can spray the carpeting, the upholstery, stuffed toys as well as the mattresses and bedding.

If you feel that you really want to make sure you do have dust mites present in your home, you can use a kit that will detect the presence of these insects within ten minutes. These kits are sold individually and one kit will test one surface only. Just testing one mattress in your home may be more than you need to realize that this could be a thriving environment for millions of mites. Although you should wash your bedding in hot water at least once every two weeks and regularly clean and vacuum the floors, you can make this task easier when you use a spray for dust mites.

You can also use the solution of the spray in a carpet cleaner so that you not only kill the mites with the cleaning. The moisture you put into the carpets can lead to dust mites making their home there before it even dries, so you do give yourself additional protection by using the spray solution along with the cleaning.

The way in which this product works is that it coats the source of food for the mites. Mites feed on the dead skin cells of humans and the dander left behind by pets. When you eliminate the food source, then you eliminate the mites. If you perform a test on one surface and use this spray solution, you will see a dramatic decrease in the dust mite population if you retest the same surface after two weeks. After eight weeks, there will be no dust mites remaining.

One 8-ounce bag of the powder for the spray is sufficient for 200 square feet of carpeting. A two ound bag is enough to spray 800 square feet, but this will be reduced if you do use the solution in a carpet cleaner. You should use this product twice a year and when you start to spray your home with it, always start with the bedroom because this is where you will find the most dust mites.

Your home could play host to hundreds of thousands, even millions, of tiny little bugs called dust mites. The dust mite is related to a spider, and so tiny that you couldn’t see them. They love to live in warm humid environments. They feed off dead skin cells. They could be in your carpet, your furniture, even your bed. To most people, these little bugs are harmless. Some, however, become allergic, by breathing in the ‘dust’ that dust mites leave behind. This can cause wheezing, sneezing, watery eyes or just general allergic reactions. If you experience indoor allergy like symptoms, especially after laying down in bed for an extended period of time, you could be allergic to dust mites. If you think you do, you can talk to your doctor about getting a skin test. The test will let you know if you are allergic to dust mites or something else. There are a few things you could do to alleviate allergies due to dust mites. You could get rid of the mites that infest your home. There are also allergy shots and medications you can get to help with your symptoms. Different techniques work with different people, and can help alleviate dust mite allergies. Getting Rid Of Dust Mites in Your Home Dust mites can exist everywhere. Usually in areas like carpet or cloth. They like to feed off of the dead skin cells that your body sheds. The most common location for dust mites, and usually the most common problem area, is your bed. For every ounce of dust, there could be 30,000 dust mites. Since the bed is usually the most common place for dust mites and it seems to be the main problem, this is probably the main focus for many in limiting dust mites. You can’t really expect to kill them all off and keep them away, but you can limit your contact with them in your home. Dust mite covers are designed to not let dust mites get through the material. You can get one for your bed and some for your pillows. While you can’t eliminate all dust mites, a dust mite cover will trap dust mites in your bed and in your pillow. You should also wash your bedding regularly, in very hot water. Washing your bedding regularly will help get rid of the dust mites and the dust left behind. Adding bleach to the laundry will help clean it too. (Remember to use color safe bleach when bleaching colored fabrics.) Massive Home Changes to Get Rid Of Dust Mites If simply using the right type of covers on your bed isn’t enough, there are other ways to get rid of the majority of your dust mites. One of the most common recommendations is to purchase a dehumidifier. These devises get rid of the humidity in rooms. Dust mites love warm and humid areas. By getting rid of the humidity, you deter mites. Keeping the humidity level at 50% or below will help a lot. Just remember to clean the dehumidifier as instructed. Another way to get rid of mites is to get rid of the stuff that they are attracted to. Get rid of most of your carpeting, or cloth-covered places where mites like to be. Of course, if you love your carpeting, you could always be sure to clean it properly. Many vacuums are labeled if they are able to get rid of dust mites. Look for vacuums with a HEPA filter. You can also shampoo your carpet clean once in a while. Just remember to thoroughly dry out the carpet as required. Leaving it somewhat moist will only re-attract more mites. There are also some powders that have pesticides in it to help get rid of mites. When it comes down to it, the best way to limit the dust mites in your home is to set up a routine and keep your house clean. You can eliminate the work by getting rid of carpets, or simply work around it using specialized cleaners. Medications That Help With Dust Mite Allergies If you suffer from dust mite allergies, there are some medications that will help you feel better. Avoiding places in your home where dust mites remain, and cleaning up areas where they frequent is the best way to handle dust mite allergies. However, if you still need some relief, there are medications that can be prescribed, or you can buy over the counter. A good over the counter solution to allergies are the popular name brands that you can get in any supermarket or pharmacy. These medications include Benadryl and Claritin. There are also decongestants or nasal sprays that can be added as a combination. Make sure you talk to your doctor or pharmacist before you begin taking medications regularly. Check with your doctor if your symptoms continue, or get worse, with treatment, or if you experience any unusual side effects. Prescription medications are available for those with severe symptoms. You may have seen commercials for Zyrtec or Clarinex on television, medications that are long acting antihistamines. There are also nasal sprays and other products available to help relieve your symptoms. If you have severe allergic reactions, you might consider getting an injection from the doctor. Allergy injections can help reduce your sensitivity to dust mites and other allergens. These are also called immunotherapy. What happens is you’re given an injection once or twice a week to reach the right dosage, and then once that is achieved, you’ll get allergy shots every four weeks. Remember that while you can’t get rid of all dust mites, and that some medications might relieve some symptoms, doing a combination might make all the difference. Many people with dust mite allergies live symptom free, or nearly free, lives using different techniques. There are discussion groups online to help discuss ideas and alternatives to treatment and prevention. These groups can also relate how different medications or solutions worked with them. If you know you suffer from allergies, or think you do, contact your doctor to discuss options.

A flea infestation can take over your household very quickly. The tell tale signs that you have fleas in the house include your family pets scratching an itch that never seems to go away, and small red bumps on your skin. The bites will mainly be focused around your ankles as they live in the carpet, however if you have children who play on the floor then they can be found anywhere on the body.

Generally fleas are brought into the house by domestic animals, they live on them and deposit their eggs, which then drop off onto the carpets, bedclothes and soft furnishings. Before you know it the house is infested.

So, how can you get rid of them? It isn’t that easy and you have to be prepared to put in a few hours’ work to solve this problem. As well as cleaning the house, you need to wash and treat any house pets to prevent them from spreading again.

First you need to treat your pet. Get some flea powder and liberally sprinkle it all over the animal, leaving it for a period of time as per instructions. This process eliminates not only fleas but also the flea eggs and larvae. Then get a flea comb and comb through the fur.

Next you need to tackle the house. Remove any cushion covers, rugs, bedding pet bedding and other fabrics and put them on the hottest wash suitable before washing down couch surfaces and mattresses. Use an antibacterial cleaner to clean all surfaces of your home, make sure you get the counters, cabinets, tables, and floors. Fleas like humid areas so you may also need to clean the basement and garage floors too. Vacuum everywhere and then empty or change the bag, ensure you vacuum even in the darkest corners as they are favorite places for fleas.

Once the whole house is clean, sprinkle household flea powder all over the carpets, furnishings and beds. Powder is best for inside the home, and effective particularly if you have pets. Easy to use, you just sprinkle it on the surfaces, leave it for half an hour and then vacuum.

Other common household pests to look out for are dust mites. They live everywhere and are so tiny that millions of them live alongside us, in our bedding, furniture and carpets. Primarily they live on dead skin cells regularly shed from humans and pets, although they are harmless to most people as they don’t carry diseases they can cause allergic reactions similar to hay fever, red, watery eyes, nasal congestion, runny nose and even asthma.

An effective method of protecting your mattress against dust mites is to invest in a fitted dust mite cover that will enclose the mattress. Remove and wash all bedding every week and put on a hot wash before vacuuming the mattress, pillows and base. Replacing your pillows with synthetic fillings and using nylon or cotton cellulose fillings will reduce the numbers of dust mites, and keep the temperature of the room below 70 degrees as mites love humid conditions. Invest in a HEPA vacuum as they pick up dust mites and their eggs a lot more efficiently and trap them inside.

Protector P Dust Mite Killer is an insecticidal surface spray particularly for delicate surfaces and can be used in any number of locations as it has no strong smell and is safe to use. You can also protect against fabric moths and dust mites by purchasing blanket and garment bags. Scented with a natural aroma, they incorporate mite-proofing insecticide with lavender perfume and are effective for months.

Before you spray, or use any pest control solutions anywhere in your house make sure to read all the warnings and directions. Most are not safe until dry so do not spray around pets, or children.

Dust mites. They’ve been climbing to the top of the trend health topics over the years and preventive products are popping up left and right. But what are these elusive critters? We know they’ve been linked to dust allergies through a multitude of highly scientific research studies. Okay, got that. But what are they? Can we see them? Are they more like an ant or a spider or a giraffe? Well after some research and digging through a stack of articles loaded down with complex biology terms, here is the low-down on the creature causing red itchy eyes and sniffles across the globe.

Amazingly enough, the dust mite is an extremely primitive creature that has been found in fossils over 28 million years old! Even more amazing, it is only about ¼ to 1/3 of a millimeter in length. Without the invention of the microscope, we’d never even know they were there. As a member of the arachnid order, the dust mite shares some relation to the spider with its 8 legs but that is about where the similarities end.

Dust mites are primitive to the point that they have no developed systems. That means no respiratory, digestive, and other various systems we take for granted. Somehow, without all these things, they do manage to enjoy a life span of 2 to 4 months simply moving, eating, and creating waste products. At some point during that awfully busy schedule they do find time to reproduce – the female lays an average of 100 eggs in her lifetime.

They have virtually no ‘native’ habitat and are found in ever continent besides Antarctica. While we can’t blame them for skipping over the icy tundra, there is a scientific reason they cannot survive there. Dust mites can live almost everywhere but they really thrive under certain temperature and humidity conditions. Ideally they’d prefer their habitats to range between 68°F and 77°F and have the humidity be 70%-80%. However, they’re able to live through everything but very low humidity and extreme temperatures. So penguins of Antarctica, rest assured that you will not have dust mite allergens. Now as for the rest of us in the world…

While they are not considered parasites, dust mites’ main food source is our skin. More precisely, the 1.5 grams of dead skin cells we naturally shed each day. That alone will feed around 1 million mites and there is not much we can do to control the shedding. Now how can these skin cell vacuum cleaners be considered a threat to our health and cause so much trouble?

Surprisingly the dust mites harm us through their waste products and decomposing bodies, not through their actual contact with us. Scientists have determined that there is a certain protein contained in their waste that sparks an allergy attack within humans, dogs, cats, and even birds. Over their short life time, dust mites will produce over 200 times their body weight in waste and then go on to die and have that same protein manifest itself in their decomposing bodies.

So dust mites will irritant our immune systems both in life and death. To put into perspective, a single mattress will have over 5 million dust mites living within. That’s over 5 million critters producing waste and creating baby mites over a 2-4 month span before they die. Then you have a new batch of mites doing the same thing while the old ones decompose and still manage to cause problems.

In summary: a dust mite is a globe-trotting tiny microscopic cousin of the spider that’s sole purpose in life is to create waste, die, and create the most common household allergen.

The number 1 causes for asthma in homes are the proteins created by Dust Mite feces. If you find you are allergic to dust, this is most likely the cause of that problem.

It’s a very unfortunate thing to be allergic to Dust Mites but it doesn’t have to be something you can’t live with. There are many Dust Mites Treatment methods and ideas out there for you to use. Some of them are just some good elbow grease and cleaning. Other ways include purchasing products like sprays of dust covers to help you out. I will talk about some of the free ways you can do this.

Obviously, the best way to get started is some good ole-fashioned cleaning and vacuuming. Dusting off areas, cleaning upholstery, curtains, wiping down all dust covered surfaces and getting that vacuum in every nook and cranny that you can is a big step. Not to forget mopping any hardwood or tile floors. That is only the first step in an overall cleaning.

What you need to know about Dust Mites is that they love your bed. The highest concentration in a bedroom will be in your bed and pillows, it’s just a fact. So you will want to wash those sheets, the pillow cases (and even the pillows if you can) weekly in hot water. While those are in the wash, get that vacuum back out and use it on the mattress as good as you can.

You also don’t want to forget washing your curtains and walls once a month. On the walls I use an all purpose type cleaner. Dilute it in a bucket of warm/hot water, grab some gloves a sponge and give it a go! Not an easy task but this will greatly improve your bedroom environment.

A Simple Tip Summary:

Dust all hard surfaces.
Vacuum all carpets and Mop all hardwood/tile floors.
Washing all Sheets, Pillow Cases (and if possible) Pillows in HOT water weekly.
Vacuuming your mattress and box spring.
Washing Walls and Curtains once a month

These are not revolutionary ideas. It’s all pretty basic stuff but something that should be done if you are worried about those pesky dust mites.
